The Haslemere Morning WI took a trip down memory lane with husband-and-wife duo Tony and Lizzie Gilks who shared their collection of historical articles during the September meeting.
Tony, a former policeman from West Sussex, began his talk, “The Way We Were,” showcasing fascinating World War II artifacts, including a gas mask and ration books. He revealed a pocket watch which had the names of a man and village in Austria. It is believed to have belonged to a Jewish man and was confiscated from him just before the war. After their retirement, the Gilks are intending to go to the Austrian village and try to find the family of the original owner.
Lizzie, the former head guide at Arundel Castle, then presented a collection of vintage clothing, dressing two members, Robyn Greenyer and Carolyn Jensen. The garments included a woollen coat adorned with fox fur and a Christian Dior double-breasted coat from the 1950s.
