IT might be the end of the rugby season, but there’s still lots of activity at Alton Rugby Club. Families, coaches and team managers gathered at Alton Assembly Rooms on Sunday to mark the many achievements of the club’s junior players during the 2016/17 season.
Club chairman Tom Gaynor presented the many trophies and Richard Isaacs, the Hampshire RFU Colts League co-ordinator, presented the Hampshire Cup to the victorious Alton Colts.
“Alton’s young players have had a great year and have done the club and their community proud,” said Tom Gaynor. “Our thanks go to them and to the many volunteers who have contributed to a highly successful year and we look forward to an equally successful 2017/8 season.”
The event was also an opportunity to celebrate the presentation of the Alistair Willman Spirit of Rugby award by club president Tom Mills to Bob Curtis. The President’s Cup itself has been awarded to Hazel and Paul Cantoni in recognition of all the couple had done for Alton RFC over many years.
The celebrations continued back at the Anstey Park clubhouse where volunteers laid on a barbecue for the young players who also had games organised for them.
And Alton RFC will be busy during the summer. On Tuesday nights (from 7pm) until June 6, there will be free ladies’ touch rugby sessions in Anstey Park and, from Tuesday June 13, there there will be be touch rugby games (again free) for all ages (12 years & over) and genders, continuing every Tuesday for six weeks.
Sessions are open to everyone and it’s a great way to stay fit. No experience is needed and the clubhouse bar will be open afterwards.
