Four Haslemere Hockey Club players are representing their respective countries at the Masters Hockey World Cup.
Ben Proudlove is representing England’s men’s over-50s masters side and Mel Redman is representing England’s ladies’ over-50s masters side in the Masters Hockey World Cup event in Auckland, New Zealand.
Su Mattingly is representing South Africa’s women’s over-55s side in the Auckland competition.
The matches will be played over ten days, culminating in finals taking place on Saturday, November 16.
Haslemere Hockey Club member Peter Williams has been in Cape Town, South Africa, where his over-70s Welsh team claimed fourth place in the Masters Hockey World Cup event, narrowly missing out on a bronze medal.
Wales beat Ireland and France and then drew 1-1 with the Netherlands, meaning the team had to beat England to go through to the semi-finals. The match was 1-1 until the final quarter, when Wales scored with ten minutes remaining.
“This was my first win against an England side in a competitive match, and our dream of retaining the title we won two years ago in Tokyo was still alive,” said Peter.
Wales were beaten by Australia in the semi-finals and then lost against the Netherlands in the bronze medal match.
However, it was still an excellent World Cup tournament for the Welsh over-70s men.
