Two Haslemere Hockey Club members have represented the club at a national level.

Ben Proudlove represented England men’s over-50s masters side in the Home Nations tournament, and helped his side win the trophy.

England’s first match of the tournament, held at Southgate Hockey Club, was against Wales, and England convincingly won 10-1. Goalkeeper Proudlove was not on the pitch when the Welsh goal was scored.

The following day, England took on Scotland and in a close and competitive match. England won 4-2, and Proudlove again kept a clean sheet while he was on the pitch.

The final game was against Ireland and England managed to win the game 3-2 to win the Home Nations tournament and end the weekend unbeaten.

Proudlove will travel to Auckland, New Zealand, in November to represent England in the Masters World Cup.

Meanwhile, Haslemere Hockey Club junior member Ruari Watt was selected to umpire at the England Hockey In2Hockey under-13 schools’ national finals and the under-12 clubs’ national finals at the National Hockey Centre in Nottingham.

There was a full programme of umpiring and coaching provided by the England hockey umpires. One of Watt’s highlights was awarding his first penalty flick.

His toughest game to umpire was the final group stage match of the under-13 schools’ tournament, where a winning result guaranteed a place in the final.

Despite the pressure and his young age, Watt kept his cool in front of a crowd of very vocal parents cheering from the sidelines.

“It was a brilliant weekend,” said Watt. “I am really proud of the set of England hockey umpire cards I was given and can’t wait to use them back in Haslemere.”

Haslemere Hockey Club hope he won’t need to use the cards too often.
