Alton manager Kevin Adair was pleased with his side’s efforts after they drew 0-0 at Combined Counties Premier Division South play-off rivals AFC Croydon Athletic on Saturday.
The firm pitch made it difficult for both sides to produce a free-flowing game of football. Alton were the better side in the first half and dominated the game territorially. The visitors were quickest to the second ball all over the pitch but were unable to create any clear-cut scoring opportunities. The home side gained the advantage in the second half and dominated territorially, but Alton defended well against their free-scoring opponents and the points were shared.
Adair was happy with his side’s efforts after they picked up a useful point to remain in contention for a play-off spot.
“We produced a really solid performance,” said Adair. “Of course we would have liked to have won the game, but the point keeps us right in the mix for a play-off spot. It was a good game of football between two good sides. I must also say it was officiated really well by all the officials.
“I watched Croydon play Farnham in the Surrey Senior Cup on Thursday, and Croydon were able to make a lot of changes because they’ve got a big squad. My lads then went to Croydon on Saturday and competed really well with them.
“I believe we will still have a chance of getting a play-off spot on the last day of the season. It might not be in our hands going into the final game – but if we can take it to that final game you never know. It is an exciting time.”
Alton will hope to keep their play-off bid on track when they travel to Horley Town in the Combined Counties Premier Division South on Saturday (3pm).
