Alton manager Kevin Adair was philosophical after his side lost 2-0 at home to Jersey Bulls in the Combined Counties Premier Division South.
Late goals from Seaney McColgan and Toby Ritzema gave the visitors the three points at Anstey Park Enclosure.
Adair felt his side competed well against their high-flying opponents.
“We knew they were going to come here and go at us,” said Adair.
“We had a way we wanted to set up and it worked for 75 to 80 minutes.
“We probably weren't good enough with the ball when we had the opportunity to play, and then when we did look to go in behind we didn't pick the right pass.
“We've probably got to question ourselves there with the quality on the ball.
“For the first goal it's bounced around a couple of times in the 18-yard box and sometimes you have got to be able to clout the ball anywhere.
“I think we've got to be dealing with it – it's in an area where we should be dealing with it so I'm disappointed.
“The second one has come with us pushing a little bit higher. We've put four players forward trying to get something.
“Two soft goals is a bit disappointing but we need to move on quickly.
“You've got to be defensively sound for 95 minutes against Jersey – they keep plugging away.
“Teams have to be able to match that and we couldn't for the 95 minutes we needed to.”
Adair admitted he would have liked his side to show a bit more composure when they got in promising attacking positions.
“The shots we had were probably from 20 yards – we didn't really get a clear-cut opportunity,” said Adair.
“You've got to credit them (Jersey) – they defend well.
“They're not easy to break down but you've got to find a way and we couldn't.”
