It might be 85 years since WWII, but relics of the war have been discovered at a new housing development in Midhurst.

Workers at Bellway’s Perceval Grange site on Bepton Road uncovered more than 25 concrete anti-tank traps, believed to have been part of the town’s wartime defences.

Midhurst was a key defensive location during WWII, with fortifications set up to protect against a potential south coast invasion. The tank traps, found near the entrance of the site, are thought to have been left untouched since the war ended.

Britain, fearing a possible invasion by the encroaching German army, built these concrete obstacles to impede invading tanks.

Bellway is collaborating with Midhurst Town Council and the Cowdray Estate to preserve these historical items and share their significance with the public.

Plans are underway to display the tank traps around the town, accompanied by information boards detailing their history.

Nick Cansfield, Chair of the local heritage group The Midhurst Society, said: “We were thrilled when Justine Hope, the Site Manager for Bellway, got in touch to tell us that they had been uncovered.

“We are grateful to Midhurst Town Council, Cowdray Estate, and Bellway for ensuring that they can be displayed across Midhurst as a reminder of the important defensive position the town held during the War.”

Daniel Williamson, Sales Director for Bellway South London, said: “It is fascinating to have unearthed these fortifications, which help tell an important story about the local area at such a significant time in our nation’s history.

“We are keen to ensure that we do them justice by putting them on display in the town and at Perceval Grange and explaining their significance to residents and visitors.”

Bellway’s Perceval Grange will offer 69 new homes: 44 for private sale, 25 affordable.
