Children at Toad Hall Nursery in Haslemere have had their poems published in a book.

The Young Writers competition encourages children to learn poetry and rhythm, and the nursery has entered a few times over the years. This year proved to be the winning year and all children who entered were published into the My First Poem book.

To come up with ideas for their poems the children were asked questions to do with their name, their best friend, what they like watching on TV and more.

Assistant manager Tyler Pay said: “It was all unique to them and what they liked was their ideas. We were learning the rhythm at the end of sentences and what they sound like.

“We had 34 entries and all the parents were able to publish their child into the My First Poem book.

“The children absolutely loved it and they were so impressed to see their own name, and it was really nice being able to compare their poems now to what they were like four months ago.”

The nursery now owns a copy of the book where it will inspire the next lot of children who read it.

Young Writers has been in operation since 1991 and runs national competitions in poetry and story writing for nurseries and schools. Themes change each year and it provides an opportunity for children of all ages, to be able to develop their literacy skills and use their imagination.
