It was sweet success for one Grayshott teenager this summer as she held her seventh annual bake sale in aid of Children with Cancer.
Brooke Garland, 13, held her first bake sale at just six years old. She was watching The Great Stand Up to Cancer Bake Off with her mum, Karen, when she decided to make her own stand against cancer. She has hosted a cake sale every year since, even complying with Covid restrictions during the pandemic.
The Woolmer Hill pupil spent weeks ahead of the sale in July designing posters, preparing flyers, and, of course, baking – Brooke iced more than 100 cupcakes for her customers to enjoy. Any leftover cakes were plated up and delivered to local people who couldn’t make it to the sale but wanted to make a donation.
This year was Brooke’s best yet, with donations reaching a remarkable £907.50, bringing her seven-year total to £3,861.50.
Brooke said: “I am so pleased with the amount people have donated over the years! This year was particularly amazing, as each year I never think it could get better.”
Her parents, Karen and Sam, added: “We are incredibly proud of Brooke and her commitment to raising money with her cake sales. She began with just a small table of cakes, and now people request new bakes each year, all made completely by her.”
Around 4,200 children and young people are diagnosed with cancer every year in the UK – that’s around 10 children and young people each day.
