A cheery knitted gnome perched atop a post box on Haslemere’s High Street is raising smiles – and funds – for Cancer Research UK this festive season.

The handcrafted Christmas topper, created by Tonia Harvey, vice-president of Grayswood WI, has become a welcome addition to the high street.

“It’s heartwarming to see people’s reactions,” said Tonia. “Sometimes I wonder if all the time and effort is worth it, but when I put it up, someone ran out of their shop to thank me, and another person told me I had to keep doing it. That makes it all worthwhile.”

This year, the Grayswood WI joined Cancer Research UK’s knitting challenge, with Tonia deciding to create her masterpiece in support of the cause. A note attached to the topper encourages passers-by to donate, reading: “If it makes you smile, please donate to this great charity.”

The festive display will remain in place until Twelfth Night on January 5, after which the gnome will find a new home.

“When his work is done, he’ll be sold in the Cancer Research shop to raise even more money,” said Tonia.

This isn’t the first time Tonia’s creations have brightened Haslemere’s streets. Previous toppers for the King’s coronation and Queen’s Jubilee raised funds for local causes such as the Haslemere Food Bank and the Hunter Centre.

So far, this year’s effort has raised £50, but Tonia hopes the total will grow as the gnome continues to charm residents and visitors.

Anthony Johnson donated after seeing the gnome and said: “Thanks for this cheery item on the high street.” Another donator, Karen Ward, added: “Thank you for brightening our day.”

Grayswood WI, an active group founded five years ago, welcomes new members to its monthly meetings on the second Wednesday of each month.
