A Petersfield chef has been recognised for his talents with a prestigious award.
Chef Mahmud Alam of The Paradise Balti House, won Chef of the Year for South East Region 4, at the Bangladesh Caterers Association (BCA) Awards.
Known for his passion, creativity, and mastery of Bangladeshi flavours, Chef Alam's win celebrates his commitment to culinary excellence and his efforts in advancing Bangladeshi cuisine in the UK.
Upon receiving the award, he said: "Winning this award is an honour and a testament to my team's dedication, hard work, and the love for our culinary heritage.
“I am grateful for the opportunity to bring the authentic taste of Bangladesh to a wider audience and to be recognised by the BCA Awards for our work."
The Paradise is owned by Samuj Ali and he has run the restaurant in Lavant Street for more than 30 years. The business has become a popular destination for people seeking an authentic yet innovative dining experience.
The awards ceremony at the InterContinental London in The O2 Arena was hosted by Angellica Bell and Ian Collins. The annual BCA celebrates the UK’s top curry chefs and restaurants and this year featured a message of support from King Charles, read aloud to attendees.
The evening was attended by approximately 30 MPs, ministers, lords, and mayors, reflecting the cultural importance and wide appeal of the UK’s curry industry.
However, amid the celebrations, industry leaders voiced urgent concerns regarding the Government’s planned removal of small business rate relief next March.
Oli Khan, BCA president, commented: “Unless this decision is reversed, will sound the death knell for hundreds of hospitality businesses. The sector has been hit time and time again, and we simply cannot take any more.
“We need help, we need support, and we need immediate reassurance that business rates relief will be extended.”
