THE three adult sections of Blacknest Golf Club raised more than £15,000 for charity during the 2017-2018 season.
The three section captains each chose a charity that was dear to them and considering there are only 230 members at Blacknest, the final amount was remarkable.
Nick Temple, the 2017 club captain, selected Oracle Cancer Trust as his charity, following his daughter Kimberley’s diagnosis of head and neck cancer at the young age of 25. Nick says that Kimberley has since made a full recovery and it was Oracle’s pioneering research that gave her the best possible treatment.
His initial target was £3,000, but with the support of fellow golfers, friends and family, and with the help of the Oracle team, he managed to raise over £4,500. With a little help from his grandson, he presented the cheque to Sarah Bender of Oracle.
Jo Canning, the 2017 lady captain, was able to hand a cheque for £5,000 to Sue Skerritt from Guildford-based Surrey Young Carers. Blacknest Ladies held various events during the year, including the TippleART social art evening and the ever-popular Golf and Coffee Morning.
Kevin White of the On Course Foundation received a handsome cheque for £5,700 from seniors’ captain Mark Weldon.
This charity supports sick and injured service personnel through their recovery by means of golf. Kevin White is himself one of their beneficiaries, having been injured while serving in the Army.
