Petersfield Town under-14 Whirlwinds girls have been crowned Hampshire Division Two champions and are celebrating back-to-back promotions after a superb campaign.
The Whirlwinds, in their first season in Hampshire Division Two, rubber-stamped the league title with a 2-0 win against high-flying Wight Eagles under-14 girls. Ellie Cossey put the Whirlwinds in front with a bullet header and Harriet Neal wrapped up the points with a smart finish.
The victory was the Whirlwinds’ 15th win of a dominant league campaign and carries on their stunning league form over the past two seasons – it was their 24th league win in their past 30 games.
The Whirlwinds thanked Ian Noble from Oasis of Petersfield for generously sponsoring the team this season.
Petersfield Town under-16 Wildcats girls have won the plate competition of the county cup.
The team was formed six years ago when a group of girls who wanted to play football started training together as the Petersfield Town Wildcats. The team progressed from playing a few friendly games at first into the Hampshire Girls’ Youth Football League. With the help of their coaches John Lowe and Dave Barham, the team progressed through the leagues and played in Under-16 Division One this season.
The Wildcats successfully progressed through the different rounds of the plate competition to set up a final against Basingstoke Town Youth at Totton & Eling's ground near Southampton. Basingstoke started well, forcing an excellent save from the Petersfield goalkeeper. From that point the Petersfield girls grew into the game and went into half time 2-0 up thanks to a superb header from an attacking midfielder and a supreme finish from the Petersfield winger. In the second half the Petersfield girls pushed forward and knocked on the door for another goal. With less than a minute left on the clock the Petersfield team broke down the Basingstoke defence once again, scoring a third goal courtesy of a fine finish. The final score of 3-0 saw Petersfield win the plate thanks to an outstanding performance by the whole team that none of them or their families are going to forget soon.
