Alton won their first home league game of the season as they beat Camberley Town 1-0 in the Combined Counties Premier Division South.
Owen Tanner’s second-half goal was enough to give the Brewers the three points at Anstey Park Enclosure.
Perry Coles had the first chance of the evening for the home side when he curled his free kick wide of the right-hand post in the 20th minute.
The first half was a tight affair, and the score remained goalless at half-time.
Camberley’s Tom Wensley was sent to the sin bin for dissent on the half-time whistle, and Alton made their numerical advantage count at the start of the second half.
The Brewers upped the tempo after the break and deservedly took the lead on 51 minutes through Tanner.
Jamie Hoppitt’s effort was well saved by Camberley keeper Owen Crawford, but Tanner was first to the loose ball and drilled his right-foot shot into the back of the net from close range.
Alton substitute Liam Marshall nearly doubled the home side’s advantage in the 68th minute. Marshall cut in from the left and his curling left-foot shot was heading for the far corner until it was superbly tipped behind for a corner by Crawford.
Adam Poynter was next to go close for the Brewers on 78 minutes when he cut in from the right and saw his shot parried away by Crawford for a corner.
Substitute George Bowerman forced Crawford into action in the 82nd minute when his left-foot shot from just outside the box was well held by the Camberley keeper.
Poynter went close again on 83 minutes when he cut in from the left and hit a left-foot shot which was parried behind for a corner by Crawford.
The second goal failed to arrive, but Alton comfortably saw out the rest of the match to make it four points out of six from their first two league games.
Next up for the Brewers is a trip to Jersey Bulls in the Combined Counties Premier Division South on Saturday (3pm kick-off).
