Farnham Town produced an impressive performance to win 2-1 at home to Leatherhead in the Isthmian League South Central Division.

First-half goals from Adam Liddle and Jordan Gallagher gave the league leaders the three points in front of a crowd of 773 at The Memorial Ground.

Town were quick out of the traps and nearly took the lead in the second minute when Liddle received the ball on the edge of the box and hit a low right-foot shot towards the bottom left-hand corner which forced a good low save from Leatherhead keeper Sonny Wheeler.

The visitors created their first opportunity of the afternoon on five minutes when Anuar Ceesay drove forward from midfield and hit a low left-foot shot from 25 yards out which was parried behind for a corner by Farnham keeper Zaki Oualah.

Town took the lead a minute later when they broke forward quickly from the Leatherhead corner and Gallagher got clear down the left-hand side of the pitch before hanging up an inviting ball to the unmarked Liddle at the back post who headed home.

Farnham nearly doubled their advantage on 11 minutes when Owen Dean drove into the box and hit a right-foot shot which Wheeler parried behind for a corner at his near post.

Town did get their second on 21 minutes when Jack Dean drove a low ball across the box to the unmarked Gallagher at the back post who finished into the empty net.

The hosts continued to push forward and Jack Dean nearly scored when he burst forward down the right flank and hit a low right-foot shot which was well held by Wheeler at his near post.

Gallagher had a big chance to make it 3-0 in the 36th minute when he was played through by Owen Dean’s perfectly-weighted through ball, but Gallagher’s effort was well blocked by the advancing Wheeler.

Town continued to be on the front foot at the start of the second half and went close to a third on 47 minutes when Owen Dean passed to Darryl Sanders, who played a nice pass through to Liddle who forced a good save from Wheeler.

Farnham created another chance a minute later when Sanders played a ball in behind for Gallagher to chase and his effort from a tight angle was held by Wheeler.

Ben Purcell was next to go close for Town when he got on the end of Jack Dean’s pass on 50 minutes and hit a powerful effort which was well blocked by Wheeler.

The hosts nearly scored a superb third in the 57th minute when Jordan Stepney’s crossfield ball was headed down by Jack Dean to Owen Dean who hit a thunderous right-foot half-volley which rattled the crossbar.

Owen Dean had another chance on 63 minutes when he blazed over from the edge of the box.

Town went close from a set piece two minutes later when Harry Cooksley’s corner picked out Stepney and his powerful header forced a superb acrobatic save from Wheeler.

Farnham continued to push for a third and Great Evans got clear down the left in the 77th minute and squared the ball to Owen Dean, but his goalbound shot was well blocked.

The third failed to arrive and Leatherhead pulled a goal back in stoppage time when Ruben Bartlett-Antwi swivelled in the box and picked out the bottom left-hand corner.

Farnham nearly restored their two-goal advantage when they went on the attack straight from the kick-off and Evans’ effort from a tight angle hit the post, and the home side deservedly picked up the three points after an impressive performance.

Next up for Farnham is a home match against Hayes & Yeading United in the Isthmian League South Central Division on Tuesday, February 25 (7.45pm kick-off).
