Badshot Lea exited the Surrey Senior Cup with a 1-0 defeat at home to ten-man Abbey Rangers in the first round.
Brad Marshall’s 18th-minute goal was enough to send the Combined Counties Premier Division South visitors through at Westfield Lane.
The visitors created the first chance of the evening when Jordan Ikala drove forward in the seventh minute and drilled a right-foot shot which was well saved by Baggies keeper Harry Cawdron.
Marshall was next to try his luck for Abbey on 16 minutes, but his shot was gathered by Cawdron at the second attempt.
Marshall did break the deadlock two minutes later when he showed good footwork and drilled his left-foot shot into the bottom right-hand corner of the net.
Abbey’s Alex Andreou was booked in the 25th minute for a cynical foul on Jaheim Kamara, and Andreou received his second yellow eight minutes later for an almost identical foul on Kamara to leave the visitors down to ten men.
The Baggies then nearly equalised a minute later when Freddie Bailey’s shot was well held by Abbey keeper Shay Honey.
The home side went close again on 41 minutes when Joe Lewis curled his left-foot shot over the bar.
The Baggies created one more chance before half-time, but Bailey’s left-foot shot was comfortably held by Honey.
The home side continued to press after the break and Bailey’s left-foot shot hit the inside of the post on 55 minutes and then landed in Honey’s hands.
Substitute Kai Allsopp was next to try his luck for the Baggies in the 58th minute, but his left-foot shot went just wide of the left-hand post.
The ten-man visitors dug in and made it difficult for the home side to create chances.
The Baggies nearly equalised on 84 minutes when Lewis’ fine free kick went just wide.
Callum Wiltshire tried his luck from distance in stoppage time, but Honey parried the ball away and the visitors saw out the remaining time to seal their spot in the second round of the Surrey Senior Cup.
Next up for the Baggies is a trip to Hartley Wintney in the Isthmian League South Central Division on Saturday (3pm kick-off).
