Aldershot Town manager Tommy Widdrington was delighted with his side’s performance after they won 2-1 at FC Halifax Town in the National League on Saturday.

Second-half goals from Lorent Tolaj and Kwame Thomas saw the Shots come from behind to claim the points.

“I’m delighted with the result but I’m also really pleased with the performance,” said Widdrington.

“Although we went behind it might have been a blessing in disguise to be honest. Our Achilles heel of late has been getting ahead and possibly relaxing a bit and we’ve let teams back into games. One thing I know about my group, they take going behind in their stride, and I didn’t think we deserved to be behind.

“At half-time I was really measured in my approach and I said I thought we had the tools to get ourselves in the game and we’ve got the tools on the bench for them to come on and win it if they need to. I’m a very proud manager because when the plan comes together it’s really good. I’m delighted for everybody because they’re a tight-knit group.”

Halifax saw the first chance of the game fall their way after just a minute when the ball fell straight to the feet of Adan George from close range but his effort was off target.

The early proceedings were fairly even with possession being shared by both sides.

Tyler Frost won a corner after linking well with Ryan Glover down the right wing and Glover took a quick corner to Josh Stokes who turned his man and dinked the ball in for Tolaj to head wide.

The hosts took the lead in the 26th minute through a superb effort by Max Wright, who found the top corner.

Aldershot had a chance to level the game immediately as Jack Barham produced a sublime first-touch to skip away from his marker and race towards goal, but Halifax keeper Sam Johnson saved well with an outstretched arm.

The Shots equalised four minutes after half-time through Tolaj. Glover delivered a low cross from the right and Tolaj turned the ball in from close range.

The Shots took the lead in the 70th minute when substitute Thomas scored just minutes after coming on. Stokes delivered a deep cross from the right and Thomas superbly volleyed home.

Aldershot could have had a third not long afterwards but Barham was denied by a superb save from Johnson.

Jordi van Stappershoef pulled off an excellent stop of his own to deny Halifax’s Jack Jenkins in the 86th minute.

Halifax had time for one last chance via a Luke Summerfield free-kick, but his effort went narrowly wide.

Saturday’s win followed a 3-3 draw at Wealdstone in the National League last Tuesday night (January 30).

Kwame Thomas’ stoppage-time equaliser rescued a point for the Shots after they had thrown away a two-goal lead.

Shots boss Tommy Widdrington was happy to take a point.

“Every point away from home is precious,” he said.

“There were loads of positives. The lads who came off the bench affected the game.”

The game had a handful of early chances, and Jack Barham gave the Shots the lead in the 20th minute after a fine team move.

Tyler Frost found Lorent Tolaj on the edge of the box, and he played the ball to Josh Stokes, who played Barham in one-on-one. Barham put the ball low past Marcus Dewhurst to make it 1-0.

The second arrived a few minutes later. Ryan Glover drifted infield and played the ball to Tolaj, who went past his defender and finished past Dewhurst to double the Shots’ lead on 24 minutes.

Wealdstone scored twice in a matter of minutes from balls over the top just after the half-hour mark. The first came from Sean Adarkwa, who converted past the onrushing Jordi van Stappershoef. Moments later Nathan Ferguson levelled the game at 2-2 on 34 minutes.

Wealdstone took the lead just after half-time. Van Stappershoef was tackled just outside his box, and the ball fell to Micah Obiero who lobbed the ball into an empty net from range to make it 3-2.

The hosts were reduced to ten men on 79 minutes when Aaron Henry fouled Tolaj and received a second yellow card.

The equaliser arrived in added time. Glover played a ball into the box and Thomas rose highest at the back post and headed home.

With a minute of added time left Wealdstone were reduced to nine men, as Mason Barrett was sent off for a poor challenge on Glover.
