Petersfield Cricket Club’s under-16 girls beat Portsmouth by nine wickets to win the league title.

Petersfield travelled to third-placed Portsmouth for their last league game knowing a win would secure the title.

Portsmouth won the toss and elected to bat first. Georgie Russell and Millie Green opened the bowling for Petersfield and conceded only 25 runs from the first five overs.

Holly Haynes (two for 22) and Harriet Lodge (one for 18) then joined the attack, removing Emma Freathy (13), Freya Watkinson (eight) and Leya Burchett (five) as Petersfield took control of the match.

Lily George and debutant Emily Heapy then continued the accurate bowling before Russell and Green returned to close out the innings, with Russell running out Neev Kainth for 36 as Portsmouth finished on 91 for four at the end of their allotted 20 overs.

Petersfield were determined to not give any chances in their reply.

Sisters Izzy and Georgie Russell opened the batting and Izzy took 16 from the first over as both girls took every single available.

Izzy Russell was bowled off her pads for 29 from 30 balls with the score on 57, with plenty of overs remaining.

George joined Georgie Russell and both girls stroked the ball around, took singles and hit the bad ball.

This gave George the chance to close the game out and secure the league title in the 13th over, as Petersfield finished on 92 for one with George finishing on 18 not out and Georgie Russell finishing on 22 not out.
