POLICE are appealing for witnesses after three people died in a two-car crash on the A339 at Lasham on Saturday (January 20).
Emergency services were called to the incident around 1.30pm at the Lasham crossroads, when a Honda car and a Hyundai collided near the junction with Station Road.
A 77-year-old woman from London, who was a back-seat passenger in the Honda, died at the scene. An 80-year-old man, who was also from London and a back-seat passenger, died a short time later at Southampton General Hospital.
The front-seat passenger in the Honda, a 90-year-old man from Alton, was taken to Southampton General Hospital where he died during the early hours of Sunday morning.
The Honda driver, an 87-year-old woman from Alton, suffered minor injuries.
The occupants of the Hyundai, two men aged 25 and 23 and a 17-year-old boy, all from Portsmouth, suffered minor injuries.
According to South Central Ambulance Service (SCAS), the crew of a passing ambulance stopped to assist immediately after the crash.
“They were joined by two more ambulances, two Hampshire and Isle of Wight air ambulance emergency response vehicles, a paramedic team leader in a rapid response vehicle, and a hazardous area response team.
SCAS confirmed that of the four elderly people in the Honda, one patient was taken to North Hampshire Hospital at Basingstoke and two were taken to University Hospital in Southampton.
Two crews from Alton fire station and two from Basingstoke were also at the scene.
The A339 was closed between its junction with The Avenue and Whitedown Lane and diversions were put in place.
Sergeant Mark Furse said: “This is a tragic incident where three people have lost their lives.
“The families of those involved are being supported by specially trained officers to help them at this extremely difficult time.
“We are working to establish exactly what happened in the lead up to this incident and would like to speak to anyone who may have witnessed the collision and haven’t already made contact with us.”
