A PETITION calling on Waverley Abbey School to take up an offer from Scottish and Southern Energy (SSE) to remove two high-voltage electricity pylons from the school grounds, free of charge, has hit 400 signatures in just four days.
The petition, launched by school parent Louisa Frampton just days after the Herald reported on the campaign to remove the pylons, calls on the Diocese of Guildford to seize the “amazing opportunity to have the two unsightly electricity pylons removed and the high voltage overhead cables buried”.
It continues: “SSE have offered to do this work, which would normally cost upwards of £150,000, at virtually no cost to the school. However, the Diocese of Guildford, for whatever reason, isn’t taking the offer seriously, after being made aware of this opportunity nearly two years ago.
“Time is of the essence. The diocese has only a matter of weeks to take up this unique and once-in-a- lifetime offer, and we need them to act now, otherwise the pylons will never be removed!
“As a school parent, I feel that if this work is carried out it will enhance the whole school site, enlarging the playing fields as well as freeing up much-needed space for parking and improving traffic flow in the area, notwithstanding the enormous environmental and aesthetic gains.”
