Vandals have targeted Lion Green’s public toilets, forcing the closure of the disabled facility and raising concerns over anti-social behaviour.

The damage in the disabled loo includes a snapped emergency cord, a broken door that no longer closes, and a strap torn from the baby changing unit. In another concerning incident, a fire was started in the bowl of another toilet, using a drinks can to ignite the flames. While this toilet remains open, there is still visible damage.

The town council, which invested £140,000 in the project, said the vandalism was “frustrating” as the facilities are used by hundreds weekly and are essential for events on Lion Green. The council has decided to close the toilets at dusk to try and deter anti-social behaviour.

The toilets have been bogged down controversy and complaints but they are also a much-needed community facility.

Police are investigating the incidents, and anyone with information is urged to contact them, quoting Crime Reference Number 45250002572.
