A highly-motivated fundraiser from Sheet is gearing up for a mountaineering challenge that will push his two legs and feet to the limit.
Matthew Clark will take on the Three Peaks Challenge for Macmillan on June 14 as he’s awe of the charity and its role in fighting a disease which has affected some of his friends and relatives.
But the 29-year-old won’t be taking it easy between scaling the highest peaks in Scotland, England and Wales as he also plans to cycle the distance between Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Snowdon within 48 hours.
The challenge – which involves 3,000 metres of ascent, 432 miles of cycling and a further 27 miles of walking – is a huge test of stamina, endurance and willpower.
“I love the mountains – I climbed Snowdon last year with friends and I’ve done a big extreme one in Norway,” said Mr Clark.
“I did an iron man challenge a few years ago and I was thinking ‘what could I do next’ when this challenge popped up, as I think Greg James did it about five years ago for Sports Relief. It’s a great challenge.
“I know it’s going to be tough but I’m doing a lot of cycling and training to get as strong and fit as possible. It’s all about building up stamina.”
Mr Clark’s training regime is as extreme as the challenge as he often goes for a run after a 100mile-plus cycle. But the pain will be worth it to help MacMillan, with nearly £850 pledged at the time of writing.
He said: “Cancer affects nearly all families in some shape or form.
“Some are lucky, and others aren’t, and that’s why I’ve decided to raise money for MacMillan. It’s an amazing charity.”
