Your Christmas gifts are sorted this year, thanks to a designer based in Hindhead.

Founded by Julia Mainwaring, Rupert’s House makes knitted, sewn, and crocheted toys, tea cosies, mittens, purses, and more.

Julia’s journey began on Etsy 10 years ago, and today she leads a team of 15 artisans, including a disabled worker who can now work from home and a widow finding independence through creative work.

But Julia hasn’t just created personalised gifts for individuals; she has also designed and supplied to Cadbury, Selfridges, Fox TV, the Dorchester Hotel, and many others.

“We’re a community of makers coming together,” said Julia. “It’s a privilege to create something meaningful for people, knowing every detail is thoughtfully considered – from the wool to the making. There is a story behind every stitch.”

Julia and her team are fighting against mass production one knitting needle at a time. Every yarn, fabric, and dye is selected based on its impact on animals, people, and the environment. By choosing only mulesing-free wool, non-toxic plant-based dyes, and supporting small, independent farmers and producers, Rupert’s House ensures that each piece not only brings joy but also contributes to a better world.

Rupert’s House has recently collaborated with Claire Garland from Dot Pebbles, bringing bedtime stories to life with hand-knitted characters from beloved tales like Winnie the Pooh and Guess How Much I Love You.

“Children are the most honest reviewers I have,” added Julia. “But it's not just for children; these handmade treasures are for adults too.”
