CAMELSDALE Primary School pupils played a prominent part in the Remembrance Sunday service at Lynchmere’s St Peter’s Church.

Members of the school’s art club mounted a poignant WWI display, including silhouettes of soldiers decorated with wartime news clippings, inside the church to commemorate Armistice 100.

Head girl Follie and her deputy Elodie read from the book of Micah during the service, which was led by St Peter’s reader Paul Bailey.

Head teacher Sarah Palmer joined parents and pupils at the gathering at the village war memorial at Shottermill Ponds after the service.

Wreaths commissioned by Haslemere Town Council to remember soldiers listed on the memorial were laid by householders now living in the homes they once occupied.

The parade to Shottermill War Memorial was led by a piper and Camelsdale Scouts, Cubs, Guides and Brownies headed the procession.

Camelsdale resident and WWII veteran Michael Tibbs, who celebrates his 97 birthday later this month, gave the Exhortation in church and The Last Post was sounded by his son Christopher.

Lynchmere Parish Council funds the piper to lead the Scouts to and from the memorial.

Its chairman Sylvia McCallum, who read the exhortation at the war memorial and led the Scouts in the placing of their wreaths, said: “It’s very important for younger children to understand what this is all about.”
