ALTON’S Curtis Museum has new displays for visitors.

Upstairs is a selection of Hampshire’s Hidden Treasurers in the form of fossil remains of the Lower Jurassic period from Whitby in Yorkshire. As well as ammonites there is jewellery made from jet, including a lovely tiara dating from the early 1900s.

The changing Village Corner has as its latest focus the village of Froyle, with a map and pictures of the area from the last 100 years. Some of the small statues fixed to village houses can be seen which give it the name of ‘Village of the Saints’ and there are photographs of a member of the Miller family.

In the Collectors’ Corner case, there is a display of interesting Courage Brewery items, especially some from the Courage (Bass) Bowls Club. In the winter of 1952, it was reported that a team had been raised and two matches played using the rinks behind the Swan Hotel – now the site of the car park and part of Draymans Way.
