A new 20mph speed limit for the roads in and around Haslemere was once again discussed, and backed, at last week’s Haslemere Town Council meeting.
There were several reasons for the proposed introduction, including that the reduction would be safer. The UK’s Department for Transport estimates that successful 20mph schemes result in 30 per cent fewer casualties.
It is also cleaner, with 20mph limits reducing tail-pipe emissions by 25 per cent compared with 30mph, and 50 per cent quieter.
The council has agreed to write to Surrey County Council, supporting its draft policy to fund 20mph restrictions zones, and requesting assistance for Haslemere to implement 20mph zones for its shopping and residential areas as a “matter of urgency”.
