A dog walker had a fiery encounter in Petworth Park after last week's storms. Debbie Weller had braved the rain to take her dogs for a walk when she stumbled upon a still-smouldering tree that had been struck by lightning.

“The tree was completely destroyed and still billowing some smoke," Debbie said. "Inside one of the branches, you could see an eerie orange glow all the way up inside.”

The veteran tree, known for its character and hollowed-out centre, was one of Petworth Park’s oldest specimens. Martyn Burkinshaw, Gardens and Outdoors Manager, said it looked like "two trees" thanks to its unique shape.

Though damaged, the ancient tree will remain standing as a habitat for wildlife. Martyn added: "This area of the park will have more trees planted in the next couple of years, so keep an eye out for its successors."

In the meantime, the tree is cordoned off for safety, and visitors are urged not to climb or stand on it.
