IT WAS a mossy day out at Haslemere Museum as it took part in the first ever National Moss Day celebrations at the end of October, with a series of activities for the public to attend.

A talk introducing the fascinating world of mosses and liverworts was followed later in the week with a tour of the mosses in the museum grounds. There was also a display of fresh mosses on the museum’s plant table.

National Moss Day was set up by the British Bryological Society to mark its centenary. During the moss tour around the museum grounds, more than 24 species were recorded. Dr June Chatfield, a museum volunteer and a member of the British Bryological Society, led the events.

Dr Chatfield said: “The events were a great success. With the season’s damper weather, the huge variety of mosses in Haslemere were looking their best.”
