The season of goodwill is truly alive in Headley and Churt as scouts and schoolchildren have come together to help out a local food bank.

Parents and pupils from St John’s Infant School have donated items to Headley Down Foodbank throughout the year to make sure families have access to food during each school holiday.

And the good cause has also received a helping hand from the two youngest sections at 1st Headley Scouts, with their Jubilee Squirrels and Beavers donating Christmas treats and other essential items.

The scouts were determined to help the foodbank out after organisers gave youngsters a talk and tour.

“We asked how we could help,” said Julie Foster.

“We were told they had enough volunteers and elves for their Christmas Foodbank box project, but with over 200 families weekly they were still needing.”

Marion Stevens, St John’s headteacher, said the school have set up a food drive to help the Headley Down outfit.

She said: “Whilst everyone donates at harvest time, we are hoping to make a year-round difference by providing addition supplies before each school holiday.

“We asked our children not just to empty their cupboards but to really think about what they would like to share.

“We asked what food would someone who was hungry, really appreciate?

“We are a small school with a big heart and this small gift can make a big difference.”
