Development projects with a value of up to £3million are being planned for Petersfield.

The details are included in the agenda for tonight’s (July 13) meeting of the East Hampshire District Council cabinet.

A total of £3m is available for the work, highlighted as essential development in the Petersfield Highways Infrastructure Feasibility package.

This covers three main development plans – Pulens Lane, The Causeway/Dragon Street junction and the railway station forecourt.

Although the initial £3m may not cover all the work needed, East Hampshire district councillor Rob Mocatta explained the meeting's approval would give Hampshire County Council confidence that the plans had the support of  local councillors before it committed extra funding to the schemes.

The first work that would get under way if the councils agree would be the introduction of traffic-calming measures along Pulens Lane.

It would be followed by improvements to The Causeway/Dragon Street junction. 

These would be designed to help pedestrians cross the roads, and improve safety for cyclists and other vulnerable road users.

Once that was completed, work could begin on the Petersfield station forecourt, the next part of the project. 

A total of £60,000 has been secured for preliminary design work for that stage of the scheme.

The whole project would be  overseen by the county council following input from the Petersfield Strategy Group, a co-operative between the councillors in the town and the South Downs National Park. 

Work to build new central car park toilets, which would cost £129,396, is not part of the ambitious highways project, but is being approved at the same time.

East Hampshire has already obtained external funding for this project.
