VOLUNTEERS are required to expand the carriage-driving service offered by Broadlands Group Riding for the Disabled in Medstead.

Since 1955 the charity has improved the lives of people with disabilities by using ponies for therapeutic riding, ground-based equine therapy and carriage-driving.

Carriage-driving improves co-ordination and balance, fine and major motor control, concentration, decision making, self-esteem and personal achievement.

Each carriage and pony needs a Riding for the Disabled Association coach and three supporters, who prepare the pony and carriage, help people into the carriage and escort it by bicycle or on foot.

Broadlands chair of trustees Nigel Hoppitt said: “Volunteers become part of a well-trained team, assisting someone to learn to carriage-drive in a safe and proper manner while enjoying themselves.”

Experienced carriage-drivers and whips are invited to train to become Riding for the Disabled Association carriage driving coaches. Details are available on the charity’s website www.broadlandsgrouprda.org.uk
