A young chorister at a Farnham church has said ‘Diolch’ to his fans, friends and family after making musical history.
Cai Thomas’s debut solo album Seren will be released on March 27 thanks to the success of his family’s crowdfunding campaign.
Donations poured in from across the world with nearly £30,000 being raised for the St Thomas on The Bourne chorister in little over a month through Kickstarter.
The money has been spent on producing an album that perfectly suits Cai’s interests and his sublime treble voice.
The 12-year-old has chosen tracks from Faure, Handel, Mozart, Vaughan Williams and Stanford along with pieces by Karl Jenkins, Ešenvalds and Gjeilo.
The album’s title means Star in Welsh and the inclusion of tracks like the traditional lullaby are a nod to The Land of his Fathers and his own heritage.
The album, produced by Simon Kiln and Robert Lewis and available to pre-order through British label Rubicon Classics, also showcases how beneficial singing in a community context can be as Cai just was seven when he joined the St Thomas on the Bourne choir.
Cai said: “I’m very excited to be releasing my first album as it’s not an experience most people get to have.
“I love the variety of music I’ve been able to sing on the album and I’m really grateful for the all the support I’ve had from some people in making it, because without them none of this would have been possible.
“I really enjoy singing with the choir at St Thomas – it’s a big part of my life and it feels like I’ve been there forever.
“While I love singing solos it’s great to sing with my friends as a group and be part of a team, so I’m glad I got to share this experience with them.”
Cai’s debut could well be a Classical album chart-topper as his first single Suo-Gân reached number two on the Apple Music A-list, while Classic FM’s John Suchet called him a “brilliant young talent”.
