Fernhurst Primary School gave a world-class lesson on community when 105 volunteers gathered for their termly working party day.

The turnout included teaching staff, parents, carers, family members, and villagers.

A parent volunteer said: “It was great to club together alongside local residents, other parents, and with every teacher turn up to grab the tools and support the school, creating a real sense of community and team spirit.  It would have taken a long time to do in smaller chunks so dedicating the effort as a group made a real difference – definitely worth doing again!”

The team helped develop the sensory garden, supported by a grant from Tesco. University of Chichester students also contributed as part of their teacher training and local gardener Greg Bedson has provided new paving and plants.

Assistant headteacher, Sarah Allen, said: "We are so lucky to have such amazing support for our children."

Other improvements included a new sensory room, a nurturing safe space, library enhancements, and improvements to the Early Years outdoor area.

The event was sponsored by The Red Lion in Fernhurst who provided soft drinks, the village shop and post office who donated sweet treats and Pizzaman in Haslemere who provided a selection of pizzas to compliment those that were provided by the PTA resident chef. 

Headteacher Jennifer Thornton said: “The school should be at the heart of the community and it was wonderful to see such support for this event.”
